On this day in 1852, the troopship HMS 'Birkenhead', with 638 passengers onboard, struck a rock off the coast of South Africa. There were not enough lifeboats for all the soldiers and their families aboard. The command "women and children first" was given. In a remarkable display of discipline and self-sacrifice, the soldiers stood in their ranks on deck as the ship sank, giving the lifeboats a chance to escape.
