Southern Pacific's "tank train" (the "Oil Cans") transported crude oil from the Kern oil fields near Bakersfield and then later from Fleta, just south of Mojave. The terminus of the loads was outside the port of Los Angeles in Wilmington near Dolores Yard and was refined at Shell Oil's Wilmington facility. The service operated from 1983 until it was replaced by a pipeline in the late 1990s. Once the oil was delivered and refined, the empty tank cars were gathered by Dolores Yard crews. From ther
