Unlike most of its owl cousins, the northern hawk owl is active during the day. It hunts using sharp eyesight, more like a hawk than a typical nocturnal owl, and can spot a vole from up to half a mile away. Its long tail helps it maneuver through trees with speed and precision, making it a fierce predator in the boreal forests of Alaska and Canada.
