This loop shows this morning's rain radar composites around New Zealand. A cold front is moving up the country today, and the radar loop shows the band of rain both with, and ahead of the front. The front moved over Christchurch around 4am, crossed Kaikoura just after 6:30am and made its presence felt in the Capital around 10am. The cold front is forecast to lie close to the Bay of Plenty around midnight tonight but the main thrust of the southerly is behind a second cold front which pushes thro

📡 At times, our radar will pick up more than just rain... In this gif, particles (bugs, dust etc) being blown along with the southerly winds show up as a faint line. 🌡 As the southerly change passed through Ashburton, the temperature plummeted: from 29.3°C at 1.35pm to 21.9°C 5 in just ten minutes! Currently 19.1°C there now (2.20pm). 📢 Christchurch/Ōtautahi, you're next in line 👀 | MetService New Zealand

Radar update (5am - 9am) 📡 A cold, disturbed west to southwesterly flow continues to spread showers across the country today. A thunderstorm cell over Christchurch brought hail earlier this morning, and there have been reports of hail in south Taranaki where a moderate risk of thunderstorms is in place until this evening ⛈ Snow fell in mountainous places in the south overnight and into this morning as well, with a couple of centimetres settling on the Crown Range Road 🌨🏔 If you have any photo

2:30pm Radar Update 📡 🌦 Rain has cleared over Auckland, but it’s not the end of the wet weather as the showers over Northland make their way south 🟠 Bands of intense rain are moving over the Bay of Plenty now, where an Orange Heavy Rain Warning is in force until 9pm. West Tasman is also under an Orange Heavy Rain Warning 🌧 Rain continues for most of the North Island and upper South Island, and is set to clear overnight most places, though a showery northwesterly flow affects the country thro

📡Here’s a radar animation of how a front rainband has been moving up the South Island today. The front is weakening significantly, with only a few light showers managing to reach the lower North Island tonight. In the upper North Island, daytime heating is expected to induce development of scattered showers this afternoon. 🔗Find out more about the weather forecast for your area: http://bit.ly/metservicenz | MetService New Zealand

📡 It's back! After a major upgrade, Wellington's rain radar is back online The new radar provides central New Zealand with enhanced real-time rain observations, particularly important during severe weather events. The radar uses the latest dual polarisation technology which allows meteorologists to identify different types of precipitation, be it rain, hail or snow. With a spell of wet weather on the way for the capital from Wednesday evening, MetService meteorologists and the public will have

WHAT THE RAIN RADAR CAN AND CANNOT SEE 🧐 MetService's nine rain radars across the country are calibrated to detect echos (or backscatter) from specific frequencies relating to rain droplets. Rain radars are one of the best methods of detecting rain and rain intensity over a large area and the images are one of the most valuable tools a forecaster has on shift (I'm sure the radar glance rate within the office would be at least 3 per minute!) However, there are a few inherent limitations of the r

Ata mārie, Aotearoa 🌅 Good morning, New Zealand 📡 Early morning rain radar imagery shows a smattering of showers over the motu/country, but most of us are in for a relatively fine day today - Canterbury your cloud should clear this afternoon 🌤 🚫 The Southland Radar is currently offline and will be investigated shortly. 📡 Not everything on the rain radar is rain, read about radar interference here: https://blog.metservice.com/Radar_Interference Forecasts here: http://bit.ly/metservicenz | Me

Where's the rain? Our network is picking up rain signals on almost all of our radar sites (not much around Mahia way) this morning. However, it's on Saturday that we're expecting the next big rain maker to come our way from the Tasman Sea. It's worth checking the forecast before making weekend plans as there is risk of Severe Weather dotted around the country http://bit.ly/SWOutlook ^Lewis | MetService New Zealand

It's heating up and there's already some heavy showers forming around Waikato 👀 Keep an eye on the radar this afternoon and know that we'll issue a Severe Thunderstorm Warning if we observe one on our radar network. Dew point temperatures are in the high teens 🥵 So there's plenty of moisture to enhance the showers that form. http://bit.ly/NZRainRadar | MetService New Zealand

We mostly use our weather radars to track the rain. But we also use them to track the wind. This clip shows the southerly change going through Wellington this morning. Green shows air moving towards the radar (located at Outlook Hill which is approximately 8.5 km southwest of Karori) and yellow shows air moving away. You can see that the southerly change has gone through Cook Strait by the end of the clip (9.20am), but not yet quite reached the airport or the city, which were both measuring ligh

🌦️Rain Band Weakening🌦️ The front that moved up the South Island overnight is now at the top of the Island, and quickly weakening away as it collides with a ridge of high pressure over the North Island. The video shows the radar overlaid the infrared satellite, which measures temperature. The colder the cloud, the higher up it is! Plenty of cold thin cirrus over the North Island, and the front can be seen with the combo of cloud and rain. In general, sunny spells will increase over the South I
