Using a diaphragm connected to a stylus, vibrations from a voice etched grooves into tin foil wrapped around a rotating cylinder. When Edison spoke the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” the machine captured the vibrations mechanically. Rotating the cylinder again caused the stylus to retrace the grooves, reproducing the
