Texans will get a chance to see the first full moon of 2025, known as a "Wolf Moon," next week. This lunar event will make its debut as the moon sits on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun and passes in front of Mars.

January's full moon, dubbed the Wolf Moon, is set to peak on Monday, Jan. 13. January’s full moon will reach peak illumination on Monday, Jan. 13 at 5:27 p.m. EST, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

The January full moon was called the "Center Moon" by the Assiniboine people of the Northern Great Plains, according to the Farmer's Almanac, which noted that the name "refers to the idea that this moon roughly marks the middle of the cold season."

However, January's full moon has other traditional names as well, including the "Cold Moon," "Frost Exploding Moon," "Freeze up Moon," "Severe Moon," and "Hard Moon," which all reflect the weather of the season.

January's full Wolf Moon will make Mars disappear, but it's only temporary. Watch for the red planet's vanishing act from the contiguous US this month.

The first full moon of 2025 is nearly here. Dubbed the "wolf moon" for its connection to wolves calling on those long January nights, this month's other astronomical events will give skywatchers something to howl about.
