The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles has agreed to pay $880 million to 1,353 people who say they were sexually abused as children by clergy.

Attorneys for 1,353 people who allege that they suffered horrific abuse at the hands of Catholic priests reached the settlement after months of negotiations with the archdiocese, the LA Times reported.

The settlement is the highest single payout by an archdiocese, experts said, and brings Los Angeles’s cumulative payout in sex abuse lawsuits to more than $1.5 billion.
