Democrats are hoping to keep their 5-2 majority on the Pennsylvania state supreme court, with three justices who ran as Democrats up for re-election through retention. If they lose, Gov. Josh Shapiro will appoint replacements, to be confirmed by the Republican-controlled senate, which could lead to deadlock on the court.

Officials in Chester County have hired a law firm to investigate issues with poll books that affected third-party voters.

Despite a well-funded misinformation campaign, citizens chose to retain Supreme Court justices who struck down one of the nation's most extreme gerrymanders.

The polls closed at 8 p.m. for election day in Western Pennsylvania. The biggest race in the area was for Pittsburgh mayor, while the retention bids of three Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices are also getting considerable public attention and financial support.

In the race for Pittsburgh's mayor, Democrat Corey O'Connor beat Republican Tony Moreno, the Associated Press projected on Tuesday night. O'Connor is set to take over for Ed Gainey, who lost to O'Connor in May's primary. The city hasn't had a Republican mayor since 1933.

Voters will weigh in on consequential races for the Pa. Supreme Court, Philadelphia district attorney and New Jersey governor, among others.
