The U.S. Supreme Court has acted in a series of cases involving challenges to executive orders signed by President Donald Trump and actions by his administration since he returned to office in January.

The emergency appeal asks the justices to halt a lower-court order keeping in place temporary legal status for more than 500,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. The Republican administration argues that the decision wrongly intrudes on the Department of Homeland Security’s authority.

The immigrants were granted legal status under the Biden administration using a process known as humanitarian parole.
