Britain's minister for homelessness has resigned from Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government following a row over claims that she evicted tenants from a property she owns before increasing the rent by hundreds of pounds.

The UK minister for homelessness, Rushanara Ali, has resigned from her role after she told tenants in a house she owns that they had to leave and then raised the rent sharply. Ali had faced calls to quit her government job after it emerged the Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Stepney had given tenants four months’ notice to leave her house in east London and shortly after they left raised the rent by £700 a month.
