Tropical Storm Erin is forecast to strengthen into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season by Thursday and could become a major Category 3 hurricane by Sunday. But as of now, Erin is not expected to pose a direct threat to the U.S. The forecast path takes Erin north of the Caribbean Islands, including Puerto Rico.

Brief: Tropical Storm Erin is likely to become a hurricane in the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center on Aug. 12.

Tropical Storm Erin formed in the far eastern Atlantic Monday and is expected to become the first major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
