Senate Democrats on Monday night blocked a GOP bill to halt federal funding for schools that allow transgender women and girls to participate in girls' and women's sports.

The House passed a similar Republican-led measure in January and President Trump signed an executive order on the issue last month.

The Senate failed to get the 60 votes needed to advance legislation banning transgender athletes from competing in female sports.
