Workers in Italy’s troubled automotive sector are holding a national strike for the first time in 20 years, with a massive demonstration crossing the center of Rome.

Thousands of Stellantis workers went on strike Friday and protested in Rome over temporary layoffs and production stoppages by the maker of Fiat and Jeep in Italy.Production stoppages and temporary lay-offs have created tensions between the company and Rome.

Chrysler-parent Stellantis should make good on its commitments to the United Auto Workers union and to communities impacted by plant closures in the United States, the White House said Wednesday.

A recent report said Stellantis may expand Ram 1500 production in Mexico. The White House says the company should keep its commitments in the U.S.
