The southern Japanese city of Nagasaki on Saturday marked 80 years since the U.S. atomic attack that killed tens of thousands and left people hoping their harrowing memories can help make their home city the last place to be hit by a nuclear bomb.

NAGASAKI, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Thousands bowed their heads in prayer in Nagasaki on Saturday to mark the 80th anniversary of the city's atomic bombing, as the mayor warned that current global conflicts could push the world again into nuclear war.

The American nuclear bomb attack on the Japanese city on 9 August 1945 killed around 70,000 people and left many more physically and psychologically scarred for life. In a ceremony, survivors and officials warned of the threats of nuclear weapons in a world of increasing geopolitical tension.
