Even as Chennai continues to batter heavy rainfall for the past few days, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has lowered the Red alert for Chennai and adjoining districts to an orange alert on October 17.

Heavy rains battered Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday as the India Meteorological Department issued a warning about a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, saying that it is likely to turn into a depression.

The India Meteorological Department had forecast very heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning and squalls on Wednesday for coastal, north interior and south interior parts of Karnataka.

The IMD forecast suggests that the worst is yet to come, with rains expected to intensify on October 16, before tapering off by October 18. The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which has already caused havoc in Chennai and its neighbouring districts, is expected to strengthen into a depression as it moves towards the coast.
