GM is willing to pay high tariff import taxes in exchange for more affordable batteries to go into what will be its lowest-priced EV.

General Motors currently sells 12 electric vehicles in the US, and every one of those uses cells built in the US. The Bolt EV will too, eventually, as GM said it would start LFP production in the US in 2027. The existing EVs use nickel-based battery chemistries, which are more expensive.

GM will import LFP batteries from China's CATL until LG Energy Solutions can ramp up production in the US. Trump tariffs may impact EV sales.
