Albertsons said on Monday its CEO Vivek Sankaran will retire and insider Susan Morris would assume the top role, as the supermarket chain shifts focus to build its digital sales and retail media business.

Susan Morris, who has worked for nearly 40 years at the supermarket chain, will take over the top role on May 1 when Vivek Sankaran retires.

Albertsons operating chief Susan Morris has held that post since January 2018. The disclosure of Sankaran’s impending departure comes the same day Kroger said CEO Rodney McMullen would resign.

Albertsons Cos., the second-largest US grocery operator and parent of Chicago grocery chain Jewel-Osco, said in a statement that Chief Operations Officer Susan Morris, 56, will lead the company after CEO Vivek Sankaran, 62, retires, effective May 1. Morris, who has spent nearly 40 years at the company, has been in her role since 2018.

Susan Morris, EVP and COO, will succeed Vivek Sankaran as CEO after a transition period. Albertsons announced a CEO succession plan under which Susan Morris, executive vice president and chief operations officer, will assume the role of CEO following the planned retirement of Vivek Sankaran, effective May 1, 2025.
